Terra Cotta Pots Makeover

If you have been reading along with Hansen and I, you'll know we started our first garden this year! Which means we've been doing a lot of garden-related projects and crafts. Did you catch our pallet planter? Well to spruce up our patio with more colorful pots for our plants without breaking the bank, we decided to buy several terra cotta pots that were on sale at Old Time Pottery (they were a steal!) and get our creative juices going! For our medium and small sized pots we did fabric pots--you can see how we did those here. The larger terra cotta pots got a bit of a different makeover! So, we went over to our local hardware store and picked up a few spray paint colors, painters tape, and some old boxes.

Supplies

+Spray Paint in a variety of colors-at least two. We chose a turquoise and yellow. 

+Painters Tape 

+Old boxes or painters blanket 

Step by Step

Step 1: Setup a spray station! Use old boxes or a painters blanket outside on the grass. Then spray the entirety of the terra cotta pots in one color. We painted one large pot in yellow and the other in turquoise. This will be the color of the pattern you choose to do. We sprayed additional coats every 15-20 minutes-and ended up having three coats of spray paint. This made a great foundation of color. I was so tempted to stop at this stage because I fell in love with how our pots turned out just with spray paint but that wouldn't have been much of a tutorial or terra cottta pot makeover now would it?

Step 2: Once you've finished the coats you need to let your pots dry for a few hours or over night. We let ours dry over night because we knew if they weren't completely dry the tape would tear off the paint. Now, that your pots are completely dried, the fun begins! Taping your pots can be a little tricky depending on the pattern you choose for your terra cotta pots so break up each part into sections. I knew I wanted the lip of the pots to be different than the body of the terra cotta pots so I completely covered the lip of the pots with tape. Then, I used the tape to make chevrons and arrows for each pot. You could make full triangles, stripes, plus symbols, etc! Just play with it! Little tip, make sure you fill the space of the pot-this will make your pots look fuller and the pattern will pop off the pot more!

Step 3: All taped? Take your pots outside to your spray station and spray with the opposite color! After you've completely sprayed your pots wait 15-20 minutes for the paint to set. Then remove the tape! You're done! Let dry over night before adding plants or water. 

I have to say, I'm in love with how they turned out! I can't wait to make more but I think I'm going to make smaller scaled ones. What designs would you do?
